I Am Alive

The Story of this game is revolving around the survival of a man to find his wife and daughter. One year after a worldwide cataclysmic event that wiped out most of the human race, a man struggles for survival in a desolate city as he tries to reunite with his long lost family. In this post-apocalyptic tale, there are no supernatural threats, just an everyman who faces a decaying and hazardous world and humanity’s darkest inclinations.

Plot

The game takes place one year after America has gone through a massive disaster known simply as “The Event,” which included earthquakes that destroyed most cities and areas. Due to the damage of the aftermath, many people are forced to go without resources. The government tries to help citizens, but their attempts are useless. Supplies become low and this causes citizens to become agitated, violent and bitter.

A male survivor (who is never named in the game) travels to his old home of the fictional city Haventon, to rescue his wife Julie and daughter Mary. When he gets to his old apartment though, he finds they have left to get to safety and meanwhile video tapes his apology for not being there and says that he will do everything to find them. As he is leaving, the protagonist sees a small girl who he mistakes for his daughter and saves her from three hostile men. The girl, Mei, is missing her mother and gives the protagonist a walkie-talkie with which he talks to Henry, a friend of Mei. Henry asks him to bring Mei to him and he agrees. The protagonist and Mei travel out to Henry’s apartment, but soon stop in a dilapidated mall to rest during a dust storm. The protagonist notices that Mei has a fever, so he goes to find a supply drop that the government landed for survivors and is able to recover medicine for Mei. The two leave the next day and arrive at Henry’s place and see that Henry is disabled and cannot walk. The protagonist is then tasked of finding a radio for Henry and traverses through the deadly dust clouds and makes it to an old boat. After searching the boat and finding the radio, the protagonist makes it off and travels back to Henry.

The protagonist makes it back and Henry thanks him and finally trusts him as a friend. Henry also suspects that Mei’s mother might be in a localhotel and pressures the protagonist into finding her for Mei. He gets to the hotel and fights through a large number of killers who have kidnapped, intimidated and hurt women to pressure them into performing sexual acts on the men. The protagonist finds Mei’s mother, Linda, and rescues her from the men. They both get back to Henry’s place and Mei reunites with her mother. Linda is able to use the radio to get messages from a boat coming to Haventon to pick up survivors. This seems as their way out but they soon learn that the boat is not coming to shore because of the dust. Henry makes the plan of creating a beacon to bring in the boat by using fireworks. The protagonist takes some of Henry’s fireworks and sets them off on a nearby rooftop, successfully making a beacon for the boat. Just after they set it up though, hunters attack and the protagonist is forced to fight them off but Henry is nowhere to be found after. Finally, the beacon attracts the boat and it arrives at the dock just in time.

In the end, Mei and Linda go aboard the boat but the protagonist decides to stay, hoping to find Henry and his family. Mei and Linda bid him farewell and he records his last tape and says that he will find Julie and Mary and try to rescue Henry, before it is shown that Julie has been watching all his videos and currently has all his gear as well. She cries after the video ends and it is left on a cliffhanger whether or not the protagonist or Henry survived.

Gameplay

The player controls the main character from a third person perspective during navigation, the camera switches to first-person when aiming and shooting. During encounters with hostile survivors, the player can use various tactics to stay alive, including sneaking to surprise enemies with a machete quick kill, performing stealth kills with a bow, or using bluff and intimidation e.g. pointing an empty gun at hostilenon-playable characters.

The game has an emphasis on climbing and exploration. The player will scale wrecked buildings and navigate hazardous areas. Every effort has a cost and, when engaging in physically demanding activities, such as climbing or jumping, it is critical to manage the main character’s stamina for him to survive. By managing stamina skillfully players are rewarded by accessing hidden paths, resources and other survivors.

Gameplay also involves collecting hidden resources and supplies scattered throughout the city: water, food, batteries, gas, medicine, cigarettes, tools, climbing gear, weapons, and ammunition. Anything that the player can salvage from the destroyed city can be used to keep the main characters strong and healthy, or prove helpful in his quest by allowing him to rescue survivors. Retries can be collected throughout the game by helping or rescuing people, with optional side quests to complete.

Sleeping Dogs

Posted: September 6, 2012 by Tuhinansu in New, reviews

Welcome to Hong Kong, a vibrant neon city teeming with life, whose exotic locations and busy streets hide one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world: the Triads. You play the role of Wei Shen, an undercover cop trying to take down the Triads from the inside out. You’ll have to prove yourself worthy as you fight your way up the organization, taking part in brutal criminal activities without blowing your cover. Torn between your loyalty to the badge and a criminal code of honor, you will risk everything as the lines between truth, loyalty and justice become permanently blurred.

You’ve just planted a surveillance bug on orders from your superior officer. As you sneak away you receive a text message. Your connection at the chop shop needs a high-end sports coupe. You spot the car and tear the driver from the front seat, kicking him in the midsection before speeding off to claim your money.

The line between hero and villain is wonderfully blurred in the action role-playing game “Sleeping Dogs” (Square Enix for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $59.99; for PC, $49.99).

Sleeping Dogs is a 2012 open world action-adventure video game developed by United Front Games in conjunction with Square Enix London Studios and published by Square Enix, released on August 14, 2012, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.Sleeping Dogstakes place in Hong Kong and focuses on an undercover operation to infiltrate the Triads.

The game was originally in development as an original IP, but was announced in 2009 as True Crime: Hong Kong, the third installment and a reboot of the True Crime series.[7] As a result of the game’s high development budget and delays, it was canceled by Activision in 2011. Six months later, it was announced that Square Enix had picked up the publishing rights to the game, but the game was renamed Sleeping Dogs in 2012 since Square Enix did not purchase the True Crime name rights.

GAMEPLAY :

The core gameplay of Sleeping Dogs consists of giving the player an open world environment in which to move around freely. Sleeping Dogs is played as an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective action-adventure game with role-playing elements. The player controls Wei Shen, a Chinese-American police officer, as he goes undercover to infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triad organization. On foot, the player character has the ability to walk, run, jump, climb over obstacles and swim, as well as use weapons and martial arts in combat. Players also drive a variety of vehicles including automobiles, boats, and motorcycles.

The role-playing elements consist of upgrades that fall under both police and triad skill trees. The more police tasks you complete, the more experience you gain to improve those skills; the same for triad tasks. This design forces you to choose certain skills at the expense of others, but you also need to maintain balance to throw off suspicion on both ends.

You can travel to various martial arts schools scattered throughout the city to fight, join the street racing circuit or just drive around listening to one of several radio stations. Kerrang Radio, featuring British alt-rock, was my personal favorite.

“Sleeping Dogs” is not breaking any new ground in the action-RPG genre, but with an engrossing story line and plenty of wild things to do around Hong Kong, it’s an excellent title that shouldn’t be missed.

PLOT :

The game starts in a Hong Kong Shipping Harbor, where undercover police officer Wei Shen is busted after a drug deal gone bad. Thrown into jail, Wei meets his old friend, Jackie Ma, who offers Wei to join his gang after they are released. Wei meets with Superintendent Thomas Pendrew in the interrogation room and his handler Raymond Mak. Wei asserts that he now has links with the Sun On Yee. After meeting with Jackie, Wei is introduced to Winston Chu, a Sun On Yee red pole and leader of the “Water Street Gang”. To prove his loyalty, Winston sends Wei on various missions to seize back territory from Winston’s rival, Sam “Dogeyes” Lin, leader of the “Jade Gang”. During one mission, Wei is arrested by Inspector Jade Teng, but Pendrew bails him out and affirms his identity to Teng.

Winston decides to take the offensive by attacking one of Dogeyes’ warehouses. However, doing so will displease the Chairman and Dragon Head of the Sun On Yee, Uncle Po. Wei convinces Winston to spare Dogeyes’ drug maker Siu Wah and give Uncle Po a bigger profit than what the Jade Gang offers. Wei succesfully does so and fully earns the trust of the Water Street Gang. When Winston is contacted by Uncle Po, who wishes to meet with Wei, he relays the meeting to Raymond, who is concerned that Wei is becoming “one of them”. However, Raymond relents as Wei has gotten ever closer to infilitrating the Sun On Yee. During Winston and his fiancée Peggy Li’s wedding day, the Sun on Yee is attacked by rival Triad “18K”. Amidst the fighting, Winston and Peggy are shot dead and Uncle Po is critically wounded, but Wei manages to get him to the hospital. For saving his life, Uncle Po promotes Wei to the rank of red pole and succeeds Winston as leader of the Water Street Gang.

When fellow Sun On Yee red pole Henry “Big Smile” Lee threatens to take the Water Street Gang’s territory, Wei refuses and Lee’s henchmen unsuccessfully intimidate Wei. However, he agrees to an alliance with red pole “Broken Nose” Jiang to prevent Lee from achieving his goals. During a meeting with other red poles and a hospitalized Uncle Po, a temporary Chairman must be elected. Jiang suggests Po’s nephew “Two Chin” Taso, to avoid Lee nominating himself. On Jiang’s request, Wei sabotages Tsao’s residence to make him appear incompetent to lead, making the position of Chairman limited to Lee and Jiang. When Uncle Po suddenly dies, Wei is told by Pendrew his undercover duties are over, though he protests: if Lee becomes the Dragon Head, the Sun On Yee will be worse than it was under Uncle Po.

Furious at Wei’s insubordination, Pendrew leaks information about his undercover operations to Lee, who orders Jackie’s kidnapping in order to lure out Wei. Although Wei frees Jackie, Jackie is once again kidnapped and killed by the 18K. Captured and tortured, Wei manages to escape and sets out to assassinate Lee, slaughtering his men standing between them. After a long arduous chase, Wei corners Lee and kills the over-ambitious red pole. Raymond congratulates Wei on a case well done, but delivers the news that Pendrew has been promoted to Interpol, thus any complaints against him won’t be heard. Jiang, who has consolidated her power in the Sun On Yee and ascended to become Chairwoman, is shown monitoring Wei and despite his cover blown, spares his life due to the loyalty he showed to her. As a token of goodwill, she sends him a package with video surveillance detailing Uncle Po’s death by the hands of Pendrew. With this incriminating evidence, Wei throws Pendrew into jail, knowing he will not survive long in a place filled with Triad members he has put away throughout his former career.
